CAMEG: “If I didn’t feel capable, I wouldn’t have come”, Dr Anne Maryse Khaboré, new general director

A new wind is blowing through the Central Purchasing of Generic Essential Medicines and Medical Consumables (CAMEG). After a year of political-legal-judicial crisis (2016-2017), followed by a transition of more than a year, another page has just opened with the installation of Dr Anne Maryse Khaboré as new director general, this Monday, June 4, 2018 in Ouagadougou.

After more than a year (April 2017-June 2018) spent as provisional administrator of CAMEG, Dr Charlemagne Gnoula passed the torch to the new general director, Dr Anne Maryse Khaboré. Appointed by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, May 31, 2018, following a call for applications, she was installed in her position at the structure's headquarters in Ouagadougou, by the president of the CAMEG Board of Directors, Dr. Samba Diallo. It is “fully satisfied” that Dr Charlemagne Gnoula passed the baton to his successor. At the start of his mandate, he had four essential missions, according to the memorandum of understanding to end the crisis, namely to restore serenity within CAMEG, to reassure suppliers so that the availability of medicines is improved, to improve the administrative and financial governance, reread the texts and initiate the process of recruiting the new general director.
At the end of his mission, cohesion and serenity reign in the CAMEG house; the substantial upgrading of the stock of pharmaceutical products and the reduction in the shortage rate is effective; the restoration of supplier confidence is regained; the review of administrative and financial procedures is carried out; new statutes and internal regulations have been adopted; and the recruitment, through a call for applications, of a new general director is a real thing. “I dare to hope that these texts will make it possible to secure CAMEG for a long time and ensure that we can devote ourselves exclusively to making medicines available to the population,” he indicated. While congratulating the new director general, he praised the frank collaboration with the staff and hoped that the same support would be given to Dr Khaboré in order to bring CAMEG to its highest level of development.
“If I didn’t feel capable, I wouldn’t have come,” suggested Dr Anne Maryse Khaboré after her installation. For her, it was a long and meticulous recruitment process that led to this result and she understands the challenges that CAMEG faces. The pharmacist by training, former director of commercial operations at Novartis, with her master's degree specialized in medical management and biotechnology of health industries, believes she can meet the challenges thanks to the support of CAMEG collaborators, technical partners and all the world.

For those who think that it is because of her family ties with the President of Faso that she was appointed to this position, response from the new captain of CAMEG: “These controversies for me are a sign of a democratic country where everyone can express their opinion… these are discussions that are a bit sterile. The big question should be “do I have the expertise to get CAMEG out of this crisis?” An expertise that she believes she acquired after more than fourteen years of international experience in multinational companies across different sectors of activity and different positions. It was therefore time for her to come and bring her expertise to her country. Dr Khaboré asks her detractors to judge her on her actions and not on anything else.
